Was apprenticed to British Anzani Engineering Company, 1935-38. Became design draughtsman with Nash & Thompson Ltd., 1938-42. SALMON, Arthur John. Deputy Chairman, Cable Printing and Publishing Co. Ltd., W.C. 1 . Born Kent, 30th October, 1875. Educated at Queen Elizabeth's School, Barnet. Received training at the Royal Veterinary College. Prior to becoming London Manager of the " Motor World " he was associated with various Cycle Organisations. Left Motor World in 1918 to join present firm as Advertisement Manager of " The Garage and Motor Agent " ; appointed Director, 1937, Joint Managing Director, 1947, Deputy Chairman, 1949. In the early i9oo's was a keen competitor and organiser of Hill Climbs and other motoring events. Organised Aston Hill Climbs and originated one-make Motor Clubs with Riley Motor Car Club in 1925. Founded the Fellowship of the Motor Industry, of which he is at present Chairman, in 1936. Qualification for membership of the Fellowship is 25 years in the Industry. In 1939 went to Malaya as the Shell Sales/Service Engineer. Escaped from Singapore on its surrender to the Japanese in 1942 and joined the Admiralty in South Africa as Assistant Inspector of Naval Ordnance. Joined Royal Flying Corps on its initial formation at Farnborough in 1912 and gained much experience with Balloons, Kites, Airships and Airplanes. Did design work afterwards at White and Poppe Ltd. on engines and at Coventry Chain Co. on transmissions. Joined Daimler Experimental Design Office leaving them to serve in R.F.A. in India, Mesopotamia and Egypt. In 1919 was attached to Royal Air Force and returned later that year to Daimler's. From 1922 until 1934 was with Triumph's as Chief Designer leaving them to join Alvis Limited as designer of Touring Cars and Armoured Vehicles, for five years. In October, 1939, joined Mechanisation Board as Senior Design Officer. Later graded as Assistant Engineer and Acting Assistant Director.
