Was apprenticed to British Anzani Engineering Company, 1935-38. Became design draughtsman with Nash & Thompson Ltd., 1938-42. SALMON, Arthur John. Deputy Chairman, Cable Printing and Publishing Co. Ltd., W.C. 1 . Born Kent, 30th October, 1875. Educated at Queen Elizabeth's School, Barnet. Received training at the Royal Veterinary College. Prior to becoming London Manager of the " Motor World " he was associated with various Cycle Organisations. Left Motor World in 1918 to join present firm as Advertisement Manager of " The Garage and Motor Agent " ; appointed Director, 1937, Joint Managing Director, 1947, Deputy Chairman, 1949. In the early i9oo's was a keen competitor and organiser of Hill Climbs and other motoring events. Organised Aston Hill Climbs and originated one-make Motor Clubs with Riley Motor Car Club in 1925. Founded the Fellowship of the Motor Industry, of which he is at present Chairman, in 1936. Qualification for membership of the Fellowship is 25 years in the Industry. SAMUEL, Richard Greville, M.A. (CANTAB.), M.R.C.S., D.P.H. Medical Officer to the Rootes Group, Coventry. Born Skewan, Glamorgan, 27th September, 1907. Educated at Westminster School; Emmanuel College, Cambridge and St. Bartholomews Hospital. After qualifying held appointments as House Physician, Houst Surgeon and Casualty Officer at Swansea General Hospital. Succeeded his father, the late David Samuel, J.P. in practice at Skewan. Became medical officer (S.W. Wales) AngloIranian & Shell-Mex Petroleum Co. Gave up practice and served during the war in R.N.V.R. Became M.O. to Royal Naval Armaments Depots and Torpedo Factories. Received technical training in the Engineering Dept. of Ferodo Ltd. Entered the Service Dept. of W. R. Sanders Ltd. in 1928. Served in the 1939-45 war (Awarded Chevalier of the Order of Leopold II with palm, and the Croix de Guerre with palm in 1940). On cessation of hostilities in 1945 returned to W. R. SANDERSON, Basil, M.C. Director, Ford Motor Co. Ltd. Born 19th June, 1894. Educated at Rugby; Trinity College, Oxford. Commissioned in Duke of Lancaster's Own Yeomanry, during 1914 war. Awarded M.C. and bar, twice mentioned in Despatches, Belgian Croix de Guerre. Joined staff of White Star Line and in 1927 Shaw Savill & Albion Co. Ltd. as Manager—is now Chairman and Managing Director of this firm. Is also a Director of several other shipping Lines and of the Bank of England. Joined Asiatic Petroleum Company (now the Shell Petroleum Company) and spent a year at the Ricardo research laboratories and touring the factories of the major diesel engine manufacturers in England. In 1939 went to Malaya as the Shell Sales/Service Engineer. Escaped from Singapore on its surrender to the Japanese in 1942 and joined the Admiralty in South Africa as Assistant Inspector of Naval Ordnance. SYKES, Arthur Alfred. Principal Engineer (Wheeled Vehicles) at Fighting Vehicles Design Establishment, Ministry of Supply, Chobham Lane, Near Chertsey, Surrey. Telephone: Ascot 116o. Born Kettering, 6th July, 1893. Educated at The Bridge School, Walsall and received technical training at Coventry Technical Institute. Became student at Rover Co's. works in 1907 and subsequently worked in drawing office at Singer's on Car and Motor-Cycle design. Joined Royal Flying Corps on its initial formation at Farnborough in 1912 and gained much experience with Balloons, Kites, Airships and Airplanes. Did design work afterwards at White and Poppe Ltd. on engines and at Coventry Chain Co. on transmissions. Joined Daimler Experimental Design Office leaving them to serve in R.F.A. in India, Mesopotamia and Egypt. In 1919 was attached to Royal Air Force and returned later that year to Daimler's. From 1922 until 1934 was with Triumph's as Chief Designer leaving them to join Alvis Limited as designer of Touring Cars and Armoured Vehicles, for five years. In October, 1939, joined Mechanisation Board as Senior Design Officer. Later graded as Assistant Engineer and Acting Assistant Director. After World War II was appointed Principal Scientific Officer and more recently to his present post. Married, 1925; son and daughter (twins). Married, 1948 to Hilda Mary Gilbert of R.
