RADCLIFFE, Frank, B.SC., A.M.I.MECH.E., A.F.R.AE.S. Author of technical articles on engineering, aviation, etc. Born Burnley, 8th October, 1899. Educated at Burnley Grammar School; Victoria University, Manchester. Became an apprentice with B. & S. Massey Ltd., Manchester. Joined design staff of Blackburn Aero Co. and Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft Co., 1921-24. Left to join Gloster Aircraft in 1924. RADFORD, Harold. Chairman and Managing Director, Harold Radford & Co. Ltd., Melton Court, South Kensington, S.W.7. Born Bromley, 26th September, 1908. Educated at Marlborough College. Death of his grandfather interrupted university education and he went straight into the family business before graduating at Cambridge. The business (Staley, Radford & Co. Ltd.) is that of Ship Brokers and Shipping, Forwarding and Passenger Agents. Went to S. Africa for six months training, returned and spent a further twelve months with Orient line and six months at Lloyds. Became attracted to the idea of running a motor business on strictly ethical lines. Borrowed a small sum from his father commencing as Harold Radford & Co. Ltd. in 1941. Later, in 195o, founded Harold Radford (Coachbuilders) Ltd., North Circular Road, N.W.Io. Is also Chairman of Staley, Radford & Co. Ltd., Leadenhall House, Leadenhall Street, E.C.3, and of Staley, Radford & Co. (East Africa) Ltd., Kilindini Road, Mombassa. Is a Member of Lloyds. Has always been a keen lawn tennis and squash racquets player, having played for Queen's Club and the Jesters respectively, also for Kent County in both games. In 1936 became apprentice and later Sales Representative with St. Albans Rubber Co. Served 1939-46 in H.M. Forces. Commissioned. Wounded in Holland while serving with 11th Armoured Division. Joined Dunlop's, Birmingham in Process Control Division on demobilisation. Transferred to Dunlop (S.A.) Ltd. in 1948, becoming their Service Representative in S. Africa (Durban and J'burg.). RAITHBY, Harold Ernest. Works Manager, A.C.-Sphinx Spark Plug Company, Dunstable. (Division of General Motors Ltd.). Born Birmingham, 5th November, 1900. Educated at Bordesley Green School and studied engineering at Alumrock Technical School. Became apprenticed to tool-making in 1914. Foreman of Press Shop, 1923. Has spent training periods at Austin's and at B.S.A.s. Served with 8th Worcesters during 1914 war. Joined Special Constabulary, 1938 (Mobile) and is still a member. Is a member of M.A.A. and Chairman of Worcester Section of National Association of Cycle Traders. A Director of Ranford Radio Ltd. and a member of R.T.R.A. RANSLEY, Charles Cecil, A.M.I.MECH.E. Retired Motor Transport Officer, G.P.O. Born Chelsea, 13th November, 1877. Educated at Regent Street Polytechnic; King's College, London. Entered Civil Service via Competition in 1896. Became connected with Motor Transport since its adoption by G.P.O. in 1907. Recreation: Billiards. RAPLEY, Harold George Rowland. Purchasing Manager, Caffyns Ltd., Eastbourne. Born Sundridge, 13th December, 1912. Educated at Rye, Brighton and Pembury. Apprenticed to Motor Trade with Chas. Baker (of Tunbridge) Ltd., afterwards became Spare Parts Manager with same firm. In 1936 the Company became a subsidiary of Caffyns and he retained the same position under the new regime. During the war handled Spare Parts for R.A.F. vehicles under C.R.O. Control and was Assistant M.T.O. Home Guard H/Q. Coy., Tunbridge. Promoted to present position, 1946. RATCLIFFE, Cyril Stanley. Managing Director, Cyril S. Ratcliffe (Colchester) Ltd. Born Great Yeldharn, 2ISt December, 1885. Educated privately. Served apprenticeship in his father's foundry and machine shops. Subsequently joined with his two brothers trading as Ratcliffe Bros. in 1902. Built' " Reliable " bicycles and also Motor Bicycles. Owned and repaired primitive Motor Cars. In 1910 emigrated to Western Canada. Placed in charge of Canadian Pacific Rly's. transport depot (Packard cars). Returned to England on outbreak of war and engaged on manufacturing Stokes shells, then worked on maintenance of a fleet of farm Tractors under A.E. Committee. Invented Skeleton Wheels Patent No. 350738 and Mounted subsoil Tractor Unit Patent No. 15482. In 1927 became Managing Director of above firm and built 3 storey-building 5,400 sq. ft. at present address. RAWSON, William Leonard. Export Manager, B.S.A. Cycles and certain Associated concerns, Small Heath, Birmingham. Born Fyzabad, India, 2nd April, 1901. Educated at Yardley Grammar School and Birmingham Central Technical College. Served five years apprenticeship with B.S.A. Cycles Ltd. and during this time obtained Higher National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering. Between 1924 and 1939 was a member of the visiting staff at Birmingham Technical College, Mechanical Engineering Department. Became Service Manager and was responsible for after sales service of all the Company's products, cycles and motor cycles. In 1939 created and organised a sub-contracting scheme under the control of B.S.A. Guns Ltd., for the manufacture and assembling of Browning and BESA Guns and Oerilkon 20 m.m. Cannon. In connection with this was awarded the M.B.E. in the 1943 Birthday Honours List. Present position includes the export side of Sunbeam Cycles Ltd. and of New Hudson Ltd. Interest: Bee-keeping. RAYMOND, Stanley Edward, M.INST.T. Chief Staff and Welfare Officer, Road Haulage Executive, 222, Marylebone Road, N.W.I. Telephone: Paddington r r61. Born London, loth August, 1913. Educated at Orphanage, and Grammar School, Hampton. Entered Civil Service in 193o as Tax Officer, later taking top place in Examination for Assistant Inspectors of Taxes. Was a member of the Executive Council of the Inland Revenue Staff Federation for many years. At beginning of 1939 resigned appointment as Inspector and became Assistant Secretary to the Society of Civil Servants. From 1940 was Chairman of the Postal and Telegraph Censorship Departmental Whitley Council (Staff Side). In 1943 volunteered for Army. Received commission in R.A. (Field) in 1944. Wounded in Normandy. Returned to Belgium as a Civil Affairs Staff Officer in March, 1945. Entered Germany with American 9th Army as a Military Government Officer and was promoted Major, 1945 and to Lieut.-Col. in 1946. In December, 1946 joined L.P.T.B. as Principal Executive Assistant to Chief Staff and Welfare Officer continuing in that position with London Transport Executive. Appointed to present post in 1948. Studied at Lincoln Technical School and became apprentice with Ruston & Hornsby Ltd., Grantham. Joined R.A.F. as Cadet in 1918, training as Pilot. Worked in Ruston & Hornsby's drawing office, 1919-29 joining Morris Motors Ltd. in the latter year. Between 1939 and 1945 was in charge of Technical Section, No. I Civilian Repair Unit, R.A.F. Served in R.A.M.C. and with 1st 2nd London Heavy Battery for Officers' Training. Received Military Medal in 1917. Returned to civil life joining Vowlers Ltd. of Torquay and later Reed Bros., Torquay. READING, Eric Victor. Managing Director, Talbot Garage Company (Stourbridge) Ltd. Born Stourbridge, 1896. Educated at King Edward VI Grammar School, Stourbridge. In 1911 became an apprentice with Wolseley Motors Ltd. Served 41 years with H.M. Forces in France during World War I. Educated at Merchant Venturers' Technical College, Bristol, afterwards studying Engineering at University of Bristol. In 1912 became representative for Halford Motor Lorries in West of England. Joined 12th Gloucester (Bristol) Batn. in 1914, became Sergeant in 1915 and received Commission in same year. Served in France with Royal Engineers, rank of Captain, wounded March, 1918. Demobilised, 1919 and undertook representation of several American Companies including that of Service Recorder Co. of Cleveland, U.S.A. In 1929 formed above Company manufacturing running Time Recorders under American Licence. In addition is Managing Director of the Mercury Truck & Tractor Co. Subsequently shot down in France and made prisoner of war. Received technical training in his father's coachbuilding works, in the days when living above the works his father, the proprietor, drew wages of k2 per week. Served in R.A.S.C. for four years during 1914 war mainly in Near and Middle East. Afterwards became Assistant Manager, Shipping Department, Willys Overland Ltd. Joined present organisation in 1920. Among other duties was responsible for transportation of record-breaking cars and boats for Sir Henry Segrave, Sir Malcolm Campbell, Kay Don and John Cobb to the Continent, Canada and U.S.A. Educated at Burgh and became an apprentice serving with his uncle at Burgh. In 1906 was employed by Colonel Cody at North Camp, Aldershot. Joined Humber's at Beeston in 1908. In 1910 took over management of a new Branch of Brainsby's, Peterborough leaving in 1919 to found " Reed's Garage," Peterborough. In 1922 resigned, to take over the new repair Branch of "A. REED, James Edward, M.I.M.I. Managing Director, Jas. E. Reed & Sons (Shiremoor) Ltd. Born Hill Top, Shiremoor, 17th December, 1880. Educated at New York Shiremoor Board School. Started work at age of 14, having to walk three miles prior to a 6 a.m. start when the business of Agricultural Engineers was carried on by his elder brother Wm. F. Reed who was 15 years older. Served apprenticeship in this family business of Millwrights and in 1907 took it over and commenced branching into Motor Engineering. Started two businesses in Morpeth but neither were specially successful and returned to Hill Top, concentrating more upon tractors. His two sons assist him in the business. Has served on the Committee of Newcastle & District Motor Club for 35 years and is an honorary life member. Is also a life member of the Fellowship of the Motor Industry. REEKS, William, A.M.I.M.I. Works Manager, Manchester Garages Ltd., Manchester, 13. Born Manchester 27th July, 1912. Educated at Nottingham Grammar School and Nottingham Sycamore. In 1930 became apprenticed in Engineering with Billingham Ltd. of Wolverhampton. Joined present firm in 1937. Served in Royal Armoured Corps, 1939-45 (Mentioned in Despatches, Western Desert, 1940). Became a pupil with Wolseley Motors. Lectured at Birmingham Technical College, specialising on automobile engineering and machine design.
