EDGE, Stanley Howard, M.I.MECH.E., M.I.M.I., M.S.A.E., F.R.S.A. Chief Engineer and Assistant General Manager, Clayton Dewandre Co., Ltd. Born Old Hill, Staffs., 5th August, 1903. Educated at Halesowen Grammar School and studied engineering at Austin Motor Co., Technical College, later becoming personal draughtsman to the late Lord Austin at his house, Lickey Grange, in 1921-22. Personally attended to all detail design of Austin 7. Joined Clayton Wagons, Lincoln in 1925. Left to join Triumph Cycle Co. in 1927 working on design of small cars and T.T. Motor Cycles. Started with Clayton Dewandre on their formation in 1928, as Assistant Chief Designer. In 1941, joined Ministry of Supply Fighting Vehicles; designed and supervised erection of Fighting Vehicle Test Establishment, staffing and inaugurating test systems. Joined Wheel Vehicle T.T. 2. in 1943 as Assistant Director in charge of all heavy wheeled-vehicles designed until 1945, then became Acting Deputy Director, all wheeled vehicles. Rejoined Clayton Dewandre as Chief Engineer in 1946 and was appointed Assistant General Manager in 1948. Is married: one son. Is interested in English Literature and the English country' side. EDWARDS, Henry Norman. Former Secretary of the British Racing Driver's Club. Born 3oth July, 1890. Received education at the Regent Street Polytechnic. Apprenticed to J. A. Wilding & Co. in 1907. Served during the 1914 war with the Yeomanry in Egypt and Gallipoli, and with the Royal Artillery in France. Upon demobilisation became Manager, of the Abergavenny Motor Co. leaving to join T. H. Wright Ltd., as Manager. Became Director and Manager, John Landon & Co. Ltd., and Secretary to the British Racing Driver's Club in 1931. Interests : Motor Sport and Fishing.

EDWARDS, Miles. Managing Director of Pilot Works Limited, Bolton. Born Bolton, 15th February, 1915. Educated at Bolton Technical College and Loreburn Commercial College, Manchester. Son of the late Mr. Miles Edwards, Senior., who was responsible, together with his brothers, for the invention and development of power-operated hydraulic tipping gear for Commercial vehicles. This was in use before any other country had produced anything other than hand-operated tippers. In 1931 became a commercial vehicle body builder until 1937, when commenced business at own new factory, Pilot Works, to make the "Pilot" range of tipping gears and bodies. Made into Limited Company 1939.40. Became Managing Director in 1940. Extended business in the last 11 years to include manufacture of all classes of tipping gears. Just marketed a new power driven hydraulic cropping machine for flat bar, and new power driven hydraulic press. Number of employees has increased to 165 from 3o in pre-war days. Married Effie Gladys (nee Aldous) in 1939. Interests : all classes of motor sport, including motor cycle racing, though not as a competitor. Hobbies : Yachting and Caravan touring. EDWARDS, Ralph Llewellyn Drimmie. Chairman and Governing Director, Edwards Motors (Doncaster) Ltd. Born Norwood, 3rd December, 1903. Educated at Rossall School. Son of A. 0. Edwards who designed and built Grosvenor House and also financed the winning Aeroplane "Grosvenor House" in the 1934 Mildenhall-Melbourne race. Studied engineering with Westinghouse Brake Co. in America and also visited France before joining Yorkshire Amalgamated Products in engineering section—later becoming Director. In 1932, on death of W. E. Clark, acquired control of W. E. Clark & Co. Ltd. and bought and developed large site on Great North Road. In 1943 changed name of firm to present title. Is interested in swimming, tennis and golf. Hobby : composing songs—many of which have been broadcast. Is also Governing Director of W. Mercer & Son Ltd., of Doncaster. EGERTON, Justin Cadwallader, M.A. (CANTAB), M.I.M.I. Director, Egerton's (Ipswich) Ltd. Born Rushmere St. Andrew, 3rd March, 1908. Educated at Fernden School, Haslemere; The Wick School, Hove; Lancing College, Shoreham; and Trinity College, Cambridge. On leaving Cambridge joined Joseph Lucas Research Laboratories as Technical Assistant until 1932 when he joined his father's firm as above becoming a Director in 1942. Owing to ill-health was unaccepted for the Forces and served in Home Guard as a Private; in the Royal Observer Corps; and rose to rank of Flying Officer in the A.T.C., 2162 Squadron of which was in charge of signals training. Started in partnership with W. T. & S. E. Botwood, Ipswich, in 1902. In February, 1910 commenced business on own account. Joined by B. Trevor Davies in 1919 he converted the business into a Limited Company. Company also distributed the "Cycle Master" and Mechanical farm implements, Tractors etc. Hobby is Breeding Pedigree Dairy Goats; claims to have bred the World's heaviest milker (over 65o gallons in 365 days). Became interested in Cars at an early age as his father had a Motor business at Lulworth, Dorset. Became apprenticed to Motor Engineering with Austin Motor Co., Ltd., Birmingham where he obtained National Engineering Certificate. Called up for Military Service with T.A. 25th August, 1939 and served as Sergeant in R.A.S.C. workshops, Middle East until commissioned in June 1941. Served successively as R.A.S.C. Workshop Officer, Mechanical Experimental Officer, Inspector of Mechanised Transport and Company Commander attaining rank of Major for a short period. ELLIOTT, Albert, G.C.B.E., M.I.MECH.E., F.R.AE.S., M.S.A.E. Managing Director, Rolls-Royce Ltd. Born London 1889. Educated at Northampton Engineering College; London University. In charge of engine design with Napier's prior to joining Rolls-Royce Ltd., in their engine and drawing office, 1912. During the same year joined Sir Henry Royce's personal staff and worked with him for 20 years. In 1929 appointed Chief Designer, responsible for both car and engine design. Became Chief Engineer of Aero Division, 1937 and Chief Engineer of Company and appointed to Board, 1945. Appointed Managing Director, 1951. ELLIOTT, Edward Cassleton. Director, Kerry's Ltd., London, E. 15. Senior Partner, Cassleton Elliott and Co. Born 17th March, 1881. Educated at Christs Hospital. Obtained professional experience in S. Africa and commenced practice in London in 1917, having become an Incorporated Accountant in 1904. Was President of Society of Incorporated Accountants, 1932-35. In 1938 became Commercial Assistant to General Manager; Member of the Liaison Committee which held the "Square Deal" negotiations with the Railways. In 1939, Adviser on Transport to Food (Defence) Plans Department of the Board of Trade. 1940, Adviser on Transport Costings, Ministry of Transport. 1940-42, Controller of Road Transport, Ministry of Supply. 1943, Director of Transport Middle East Supply Centre, Cairo (one of the few Europeans who have crossed the Desert of Saudi Arabia). 1945, Assistant General Manager, Hay's Wharf Cartage Company Ltd., National Member of Road Haulage Central Wages Board; Vice-Chairman Meat Transport Organisation Ltd.; all of which offices terminated on appointment to Road Haulage Executive in July, 1948.
