ABBOTT, Charles Pryce. Managing Director of Iron Bridge Service Depot, Ltd., Southall, Middlesex. Born Dublin, 8th July, 1893. Educated at Merchant Taylors School, Dublin and received technical training at Pembroke Technical School. Was a Driver-Mechanic of Commercial Vehicles prior to 1914 when he enlisted in the Army Service Corps. Served in France and was awarded the 1914 Star. Was commissioned in R.I. Rifles in 1918 and served in Palestine. Transferred to the Indian Army in 1919. Served during Afghan Campaign in Indian M.T. on the N.W. frontier. During Arab rising was workshops officer Armoured Cars in Iraq, 1920. Resigned Commission in 1921. Was for seven years a Building Surveyor and Sanitary Inspector until, in 1928, he founded the Iron Bridge Depot. Outside interests include Beekeeping, Photography and Cinematography. Educated at Ark House School, and Technical School, Banbury. Apprenticed in general Engineering to Samuelson & Sons, Ltd and Vauxhall Ironworks Ltd. of Luton (afterwards Vauxhall Motors Ltd). In 1906 worked in the Repairs Dept. of Napier and Sons, Ltd., Acton Vale, and in 1907 with the Luton and St. Albans Motor Co. at Luton. In 1911 started on own account as partner in Adams Morris & Co. Luton. Joined C. &. S. C. Dickinson, forming Dickinson & Adams, Ltd. in 1918. Is presently Director of Dickinson & Adams (Letchworth) Ltd. ; Dickinson & Adams (Welwyn) Ltd. ; Leighton Buzzard Motors, Ltd. ; as well as the Luton firm. Served as Chairman or Council delegate MAA 1929-47. Council I.M.I. 1939-51. Is a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Coach makers and Coach Harness Makers and a Freeman of the City of London. Served in 1914 war in North Irish Horse; Royal Flying Corps, and 6th Dragoon Guards, with the last-named in France. After the war became apprentice with Gibbons Bros., Ltd., Gas Engineers of Dudley. Held other engineering appointments with Bilston Gas Works until 1940 when he joined Guy Motors Ltd. as Personal Assistant to the Secretary. Appointed Publicity Manager in 1945. ADAMS, James, A.M.I.MECH.E. Managing Director of Reid and Adams, Ltd Stranraer. Born Paisley, 18th January, 1887, and educated there at the Technical College. In 1903 was apprenticed to Mocar Syndicate (later the Arrol-Johnston Car Co. Ltd.) Paisley. Assisted in the making of the first Tourist Trophy winner J. S. Napier's Arrol-Johnston in 1905. And was also instrumental in developing the first spare-wheels. Joined Vauxhall Motors in Luton, 1910 (in the days of their famous racing car K.N.) Was elected Associate Member of Institution of Automobile Engineers, 1912. In 1913 founded the firm of Reid and Adams, Ltd of which he is still Managing Director. Married 1920; one daughter. ADAMS, William Dilworth, F.I.M.I. Governing Director of Hanger Motor Co. (Birmingham) Ltd. Born Redditch, 8th September, 1893. Educated at Redditch Grammar School. Became apprentice in Service Dept., George Heath Ltd., Birmingham, then served for four year in R.A.S.C. (M.T.) during World War I Worked with Easton Lloyd Ltd. in Birmingham for a year before joining present firm as Sales Representative in 1920. In 1924 was appointed Manager; in 1933 acquired financial control of business. Is also interested in Farming (Pedigree Red Poll Cattle), Horses, Hunting and Shooting. Is a Director of S. ADAMS, William Shirley. Managing Director, Globe and Simpson, (Sheffield) Ltd. Born Stoke-on-Trent, 5th April, 1906. Educated at Orme Boys School, Newcastle-underLyme and John Bright School, Llandudno. Became apprenticed to Engineering firm in 1922, afterwards joining the staff of Globe and Simpson, Ltd. Served during the war, with the Royal Artillery and transferred to R.E.M.E in 1943. Demobilized with rank of Major and awarded Territorial Decoration in Sept. 1945. AFFLECK, Theodore King. Technical Manager, Acton Bolt Ltd., London, N.W. to. Born 19th December, 190o at Swindon. Educated at Swindon and North Wilts. Secondary School and Technical Institution. Served apprenticeship 1917-24 with Messrs. Martinsydes, designers of aircraft and motorcycles. Subsequently worked with Fairey Aviation, Hayes; and G. D. Peters, Slough. First connected with automobile engineering when joining Peter Hooker Ltd., as Chief Jig and Tool Draughtsman in 1926. While there supervised machining of special cylinder blocks for the late Parry Thomas's racing cars. Has been closely connected with B.S.I. for 12 years in standardization of screw threads and fasteners. Was member of British delegation visiting Ottawa in 1945 on Unification of Screw Threads and more recently on Unification of hexagon bolts and nuts. AITKEN, Alexander Stitfull. Works Director, Longwell Green Coachworks Ltd., Near Bristol. Born 28th August, 1903. Educated at Newfoundland School, Bristol. Became apprenticed to Bristol Wagon and Carriage Co. Ltd. at age of 15. On completion of indentures worked with various firms leaving John Taylor's of Barnsley in 1928 and joining The Warwick Motor Body Co. of Old Trafford, Manchester. Took part there in the development of the Walman Head. Joined present firm, at that time trading in the name of W. J. Bence Ltd., in 1932. Became a Director when the Company's name was changed to Bence Motor Bodies, Ltd. in 194o. Firm adopted present title in 1944. Hobbies : Golf, and Gardening. AKED, William, M.I.MECH.E. Managing Director of W. T. Aked and Co. Ltd., St. George's Road, St. Annes on Sea, Lancs. Born at Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts, 16th January, 1885. Educated at Maltby's School, Mansfield and subsequently trained at Yorkshire College, Leeds—now Leeds University. Became apprenticed to Morley Electric Engineering Co. Ltd., Leeds in 1902 and during the next five years worked in all Departments studying Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. In 1907 started business on own account doing installation work at Farsley, Leeds at large works and factories. In 1911 founded his present business becoming Distributors for many well-known makes of cars. Main hobby is radio and television experimental work. Has held transmitting licence (G.5.DC.) since early days. Has also held Baird TN Constructors Licence since 1928. Married in 1907. Has one son, John Scholes Aked, A.I.Mech.E., A.M.I.M.I., who is now Works Manager and Director of above firm.

AKERS, Sir Wallace Alan, C.B.E., F.R.I.C., F.C.S., HON.D.SC. Director, Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd. Born 9th September, 1888. AKESTER, George Cyril. Proprietor of firm in own name at 905, Woodbridge Road, Ipswich. Born Ipswich, 5th January, 1904. Educated at Northgate Grammar School, Ipswich. Subsequently attended Ipswich School of Technology. Was apprenticed to Lock and Stagg, Ltd. in 1921, and five years later became a salesman with A. Fitch and Son, Clacton-on-Sea and left them in 1929 to gain further experience with Pollards Ltd., at Chelmsford. In 1930 bought partnership in present business (then called Haste and Akester). In 1935 bought out partner. Joined as a gunner, local battery Royal Artillery in 1939. Commissioned in 1940 as Ordance Mechanical Engineer in R.A.O.C., and in the following year promoted Captain i/c Mechanical Transport of 18th Divisional Troops. Taken prisoner of war in 1942 in Singapore and spent 3years as Japanese P.O.W. on Burma Siam Railway. Returned to England and Hospital for six months. Rejoined his firm, spending spare time helping distressed P.O.W's. in East Suffolk. Is Chairman of East Suffolk Section, Far East Prisoner of War Fellowship; and Chairman of Suffolk Region Institute of the Motor Industry. Hobby : Gardening. ALDEN, John Harold, A.M.I.MECH.E., M.S.A.E. Experimental Engineer (Commercial Vehicles) Vauxhall Motors Ltd. Born Oxford, 28th February, 1916. Educated Jeune preparatory, Oxford 1920-25; Oxford High School 1925-33 and trained in engineering at School of Technology, Oxford until becoming an apprentice with the M.G. Apprenticed to Engineering and served in the Garage of the Leigh Co-operative Society Ltd. In 1923 was appointed Manager of the Newton Motor Co., leaving in 193o to found A & B Motors which changed to its present name in 1938. Wickham Ltd., Machine Tool Manufacturers as Assistant Buyer. Served in Army in R.A.S.C. Mentioned in Despatches in 1944; awarded Belgian "Decoration Civique" and presented with Belgian "Medallic de Troisieme Classe" by Belgian Ambassador in 1948. Served on War Office Staff as Inspector of Supply and Petrol Depots, 1946. Demobilised with rank of Captain and rejoined A. C. Wickham, Ltd., as Chief Buyer in 1946. In 1947 became General Manager of Auto Transmissions and in the following year was appointed to the Board. Became Managing Director in 1949. ALEXANDER, Alfred Hope. Joint Managing Director, Alexanders of Edinburgh Ltd and associated Companies. Born Edinburgh, 28th February, 1891. Educated at George Watson's College, and Royal High School, Edinburgh. In 1906 was apprenticed in Motor Engineering. Alexanders of Edinburgh was an offshoot of a Cycle and Motor Cycle business, the former was started by J. R. Alexander, Senior(now deceased) his sons Henry and Alfred (the present biographee). In 1906 they started selling Model N. Fords and claim to be the oldest Ford Main dealers in Britain. Hobbies are Yachting, Fishing, Golfing. Married: one son, two daughters. ALEXANDER, James Robert. Joint Managing Director of J. R. Alexander & Co. Ltd and of Alexanders of Edinburgh, Ltd. Born Edinburgh 1875. Educated at George Watson's College, Edinburgh. Engaged first in father's boot and shoe business but gradually transferred his interest to the cycle business founded in 1891. Started motor cycle department in 1903 by purchasing a Werner Motor Cycle for his own use. Competed in T.T. Races in 1910-4. Previously from 1892 to 1904 had engaged in cycle racing, retiring as winner of two Scottish Championships in 1904. Widower since 1950; two married daughters and four grandchildren. Became lecturer and instructor at Metropolitan Driving School in 1936. Served during war with commission in R.A.O.C. as O.M.E., serving mainly abroad. Completed service as Acting Colonel O.C. ALLAN, Malcolm Lowden. Chairman and Managing Director, Malcolm and Allan Ltd., Glasgow, C.5. Born Edinburgh 25th November, 1909. Educated at Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh. Studied engineering at Glasgow Royal Technical College; and Glasgow High School. In 1927 joined present firm under Mr. James Allan, as a Junior. Served part of apprenticeship as electrical engineer with present firm and part with Lowdon Bros, Dundee. Returned to Malcolm and Allan as Car Sales Manager in October, 193o and became a Director in November, 1930. Visited Iraq, June 1933 to carry out full tests on Diesel Lighting Plants supplied and erected by Company for the Municipality of Mosul. Became Director in charge of Automobile Department until 1940, when transferred to Electrical Department to direct installation work in various Ministry of Supply Factories. Returned to Automobile Department in 1943. Appointed Joint Managing Director of the Company, December, 1943, and Chairman and Managing Director, January, 1949. Married, 1938. ALLARD, Sydney Herbert, A.M.I.MECH.E., M.I.M.I. Chairman and Director of Allard Motor Company Ltd., S.W.4. Born London, June 1910. Educated at St. Saviours College, Ardingly. On leaving school became a Director of Adlard Motors Ltd., Putney (1930). In 1938 the Brixton Branch was added. During the war staffed, equipped and ran an Army Auxiliary Workshop under Ministry of Supply, at Fulham. In 1945 formed the Allard Motor Company with himself as Managing Director—a position he also holds with Encon Motors Ltd., Hilton Bros. (Coachworks) Ltd., and also Adlards Motors Ltd. Is a keen hillclimb and sprint event competitor holding many records. He won the R.A.C. Hill Climb Championship in 1949, and finished third in the general classification at the 24 Heures du Mans, in 1950. Recent successes include winning the 1952 Monte Carlo Rally.
