URIE (D. C.), M.Inst.C.E., Divisional Mechanical Engineer (Locomotives, Carriages and Wagons), Glasgow, London Midland and Scottish Railway. Born in 1884, he was trained in the Locomotive Department of the London and South Western Railway, under his father, Mr. R. W. Urie, the Chief Mechanical Engineer. Commencing at Nine Elms in 1901 as an apprentice, Mr. D. C. Urie was transferred to the Drawing Office in 1906, three years later being promoted to be Senior Draughtsman. While in the Drawing Office, he was engaged for two years on the design and lay-out of machinery and plant for the locomotive shops then building at Eastleigh. In 191.3 he transferred to the Eastleigh shops as Assistant Works Manager, having charge of all testing work carried out in connection with the Works and Running Department. In 1915 Mr. Urie became Assistant Locomotive Carriage and Wagon Superintendent of the Midland Great Western Railway of Ireland, with charge of the Running Department. Eventually he succeeded Mr. C. Cumming as Locomotive Carriage and Wagon Superintendent of the Highland Railway. His position as Mechanical Engineer (Locomotives) (Northern Division), Glasgow, London Midland and Scottish Railway, was the outcome of the grouping on January 1st, 1923. He received his present title early this year.
