RAWORTH (A.), Electrical Engineer for New Works, Southern Railway. Mr Raworth is a son of the late Mr. J. S. Raworth, and, after being educated at St. Aubyn's, Lowestoft, and Dulwich College, served an apprenticeship with Browett, Lindley & Co., Ltd., of Patricroft, Manchester, and the Brush Electrical Engineering Company, Ltd., Loughborough. From 1903 to 1912 he acted as Assistant to the late Mr. J. S. Raworth, but in March, 1912, was appointed Chief Assistant to the Electrical Engineer of the London and South Western Railway. In October, 1915, Mr. Raworth joined the Royal Naval Air Service, and was commissioned as Lieutenant, R.N.V.R. In March, 1918, he was appointed Electrical Engineer to the South Eastern and Chatham Railway. In 1920 he gave evidence for the South Eastern and Chatham Railway before the Electrification of Railways Advisory Committee, and in the same year was appointed Chairman of the General Manager's Committee on Suburban Traffic Operation. Since the amalgamation Mr. Raworth has been responsible to Sir Herbert Walker for the whole of the electrification of the Eastern Section Suburban Lines of the Southern Railway. From December, 1922, to June, 1925, he also acted as Engineer to the South Eastern and Chatham Construction and Power Company. Ltd. His present appointment dates from July, 1925.

RICHARDS (E. A.), Assistant to General Manager, for General Welfare Work, Southern Railway. Mr. Richards entered London, Chatham and Dover Railway service at Sheerness in 1893. After serving at various stations and obtaining a knowledge of all branches of station working, he was transferred to the office of the Outdoor Superintendent at Victoria. On the Working Union of the London, Chatham and Dover with the South Eastern Railway in 1899, he was attached to the office of the Superintendent of the Line, where he served for some time in the Special Traffic and other departments, eventually becoming Personal Clerk to the Superintendent of the Line. From 1916 to 1918 he acted as Assistant to the London District Traffic Superintendent, subsequently being appointed Assistant to the Eastern District Traffic Superintendent at Ashford. During 1919 he was specially detailed to act as Secretary to the Committee representing the Standing Committee of General Managers, acting on behalf of the Minister of Transport, for the, purpose of dealing with staff and labour agreements. In the latter part of 1923 Mr. Richards became Assistant Divisional Operating Superintendent (Eastern Division), Southern Railway, and was given his present appointment in May, 1925.

RICHARDS (H. W. H.), M.I.E.E., Electrical Engineer, London and North Eastern Railway. Mr. Richards was born at Clifton, Bristol, in 1886, and educated at Bradfield College, Berks, and Faraday House Electrical Engineering College, London. As an Assistant Engineer with Kincaid, Waller, Manville & Dawson, Consulting Engineers, Westminster, London, S.W.1, Mr. Richards was engaged during 1909 and 1910 upon technical design and the estimation of costs in connection with railway electrification. Until the end of 1912 he served as an Assistant Engineer to the A.E.G. Company, in charge of the electrical equipment and rolling-stock built by the Metropolitan Carriage, Wagon and Finance Company at Birmingham, for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway Company, ,and upon subsequent maintenance work in connection therewith. In January, 1913, he entered the service of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway as Electrical Traction Engineer, afterwards becoming Assistant Electrical Engineer to the Southern Railway Company. Mr. Richards is a member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers and of the Institute of Transport. His present appointment dates from 1924.

RICHARDS (R. M. T.), Divisional Superintendent, London West, Southern Railway. Mr. Richards entered South Eastern and Chatham Railway service in 1908, in the Superintendent of the Line's Office, and, after training, became runner in 1912. In 1914 he was appointed Assistant to the Eastern District Superintendent at Ashford. In April, 1915, he joined the Railway Operating Division in France, taking charge of various detachments until demobilised in 1919. On re-joining the South Eastern and Chatham Railway he was appointed Assistant to the London District Traffic Superintendent. He became Assistant Divisional Operating Superintendent, London (West) in 1923. His present appointment dates from March 31st, 1930.

RICHARDSON (W. E.), Secretary, Irish Railway Clearing House. Mr. Richardson succeeded Mr. P. J. Brennan early in 1925. He entered Irish Railway Clearing House service in January, 1898, and for a considerable portion of his service has been connected with the Secretarial Department. He was Secretary of the Standing Committee of General Managers appointed in 1920-21 to deal with matters between the then Ministry of Transport and the Irish Railways as affecting railway workings, and has been Secretary of the Irish Railways Central Wages Board since its inception at the beginning of 1924

ROBARTS (H. E.), A.M.I.C.E., Divisional Engineer (Southern District), Southern Robarts entered the service of the South Eastern Railway in 1899, Chief Engineer's Department; 1904, appointed Assistant in District Engineer's Office, Swanley; 1910, transferred to District Engineer's Office, New Cross; 1913, appointed District Engineer, London District, South Eastern and Chatham. Railway; 1923, appointed Divisional Engineer (Southern District), Southern Railway.

ROBERTS (O. Glynne), ).B.E., M.Inst.T., Secretary, Secretary to the Executive Committee, and Assistant to the President, London Midland and Scottish Railway. At the end of 1928, the Secretary's Department was amalgamated with the Central Executive Office, Mr. Roberts retaining his former position as Secretary of the Executive Committee and Assistant to the President. He has held the office of Assistant to the President and Superintendent of the Central Office from January 1st, 1927. Prior to that he had held the position of Assistant to the General Manager, to which he was appointed in January, 1923. He had held a similar position as Indoor Assistant to the General Manager of the late London and North Western Railway from the beginning of 1922. Mr. Glynne Roberts entered the London and North Western Railway service at Holyhead in 1896. Two years later he was transferred to the District Traffic Superintendent's Office at Chester, and in January, 1900, he was appointed Staff and Confidential Clerk to Mr. H. G. Burgess, the then Irish Traffic Manager. In 1902 he was appointed Outdoor Clerk in the Outdoor Goods Manager's Office at Manchester, being made an Outdoor Assistant to Mr. F. T. kinsman in 1908. Mr. Glynne Roberts went to Euston in 1911, and after serving three years on the Chief Outdoor Goods Manager's Staff, was appointed Chief Staff Clerk to the Chief Goods Manager. In October, 1917, he was appointed Assistant Head of Staff Department in the General Manager's Office, being re-transferred to the Chief Goods Manager's Office as Chief Clerk in February, 1918. He was appointed Chief Clerk to the General Manager in August, 1920.

ROBERTS (William Hughes), Assistant Land and Estate Agent, London Midland and Scottish Railway. Mr. Roberts entered London and North Western Railway service in April, 1898, commencing in the Accounts Section of the Estate Department at Euston. In January, 1900, he was transferred, as Junior Clerk, to the Contracts and Agreement Section at headquarters. After qualifying, by examination, as a Professional Associate Member of the Surveyors' Institution, he was appointed, in January, 1913, Surveyor, dealing with land agency, town planning and other specialised subjects under Mr. J. R. Ball, then Land and Estate Agent, London and North Western Railway. On the reorganization of the department consequent on amalgamation, in December, 1924, he was appointed General Assistant to the Land and Estate Agent, London Midland and Scottish Railway. In April, 1925, he was elected a Fellow of the Surveyors' Institution. On the appointment of Mr. W. H. C. Clay, as Chief Land and Estate Agent. Mr. Roberts became Assistant to Land and Estate Agent, with effect from January 1st, 1929, 'and was subsequently appointed Assistant Land and Estate Agent.

ROBERTSON (V. A. M.), Civil Engineer, London Underground" Railways. Mr. V. A. M. Robertson, appointed Civil Engineer to the London "Underground" Railways in 1928, had previously held the position of District Engineer at, Stratford, London and North Eastern Railway. He was educated at Dover College and the Crystal Palace School of Engineering. He was articled to Mr. D. Gravell, M.Inst.C.E., from 1909 to 1912, working principally on London and North Western Railway work, and at the end of his pupilage entered the service of the South Eastern and Chatham Railway's new works department, leaving in 1919 to join the Great Eastern Railway. Mr. Robertson enlisted as a private in the London Scottish in 1914, and was gazetted to the Royal Engineers in 1915. He attained the rank of Major in a Field Company, Royal Engineers, and was demobilized in May, 1919, after three and a-half years' continuous service in France, where he gained the M.C. and Bar, and Mention in Despatches. In January, 1922, he was appointed by the directors of the Great Eastern Railway to succeed Mr. E. A. Wilson (who had been appointed Chief Engineer to the Metropolitan Railway) as Divisional Civil Engineer of the Southern Division. Mr. Robertson, who was born in December, 1890, is a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and of the Institute of Transport. In November, 1924, Mr. Robertson was selected by the London and North Eastern Railway to command, with the rank of Major, the No. 1 London and North Eastern Railway Platelaying Company, R.E. (Supp. Reserve).

ROBINSON (J. H.), District Passenger Manager (Liverpool), London Midland and Scottish Railway. Mr. Robinson commenced his railway service with the former London and North Western Railway in the District Traffic Superintendent's Office at Lancaster, and after passing through the various departments was, in 1910, appointed Chief Passenger Trains Clerk. In 1913 the Time-Table, Excursion, and Publicity Departments were amalgamated with the Trains Departments, and Mr. Robinson was placed in charge. In 1924 he was appointed at Crewe as Chief of the Freight Services and Diagramming Section in the Divisional Trains Office, a position he held until November, 1929, when he was appointed Assistant Divisional Passenger Commercial Superintendent, Manchester. In May, 1931, lie became Assistant Divisional Superintendent of Operation, Crewe, and was appointed to his present position in August, 1931. ROSS (A. P.), M.Inst.C.E., Chief Stores Superintendent, London and North Eastern Railway. Mr. Ross was Assistant Engineer, Great Northern Railway, when, in 1917, he was appointed Chief Engineer to the Cheshire Lines Committee in place of Mr. H. Blundell, who went to the Great Central Railway as Chief Engineer. Mr. Ross is the eldest son of Mr. Alexander Ross, Past-President of the Institution of Civil Engineers, and formerly Chief Engineer of the Great Northern Railway. After leaving the University College, London, he joined the Engineer's Department of the Great Northern Railway in 1900, subsequently going as Assistant to Mr. W. Marriott, of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Line, on the construction of the Cromer and Mundesley Railway, and to Mr. Edward Parry in the preparation of drawings, specifications, etc., for the construction of the South Yorkshire Joint Railway, becoming later Engineer for the contractors, Whitaker Bros., for the latter line. Thence Mr. Ross went as Engineer to Charles Wall, Ltd., the contractors for the Metropolitan Water Board's new reservoir at Chingford. Subsequently he rejoined the Great Northern Railway as Chief Assistant to the Chief Engineer, and was appointed Assistant Engineer in 1912. To fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr. W. H. Oates, in the latter part of 1926, Mr. Ross was appointed Manager and Engineer. In 1929 he was appointed Chief Stores Superintendent, London and North Eastern Railway.

ROWLANDSON (L. F.), Organization and Staff Assistant to Chief General Superintendent, London Midland and Scottish Railway. — Mr. Rowlandson entered the service of the London and North Western Railway in October, 1899, as Junior Clerk in the District Superintendent's Office at Manchester, being transferred to Relief Staff two years later. During the following seven years he had a varied experience in general railway work, and amongst other duties, filled the positions of Passenger Agent, Stationmaster, and Goods Agent, in addition to working at one time or another in every department of the District Superintendent's Office. In October, 1908, he was appointed to the District Superintendent's Staff Department, and in July the following year, was made Assistant to the head of that department. In September, 1911, following the railway strike, he was selected by Sir (then Mr.) Robert Turnbull to become head of a new section, which was to be inaugurated in the Superintendent of the Line's Department, to deal with staff matters consequent on the increasing importance of that branch of the work. Between March, 1919, and December, 1920, he was Chairman of the Committee of Traffic Staff Representatives dealing with the standardization of grading, rates of pay, and conditions of Britain, and also acted as Secretary to the Traffic Negotiating Committee which conducted the negotiations with the men's representatives. In connection with the reorganization of the London and North Western Railway as from January 1st, 1922. Mr. Rowlandson was appointed Assistant to the Divisional General Superintendent (Staff), Southern Division, and in March, 1923, was appointed to a similar position on the staff of the General Superintendent. Western Division, London Midland and Scottish Railway. His present appointment dates from May, 1927.

ROYLE (T. W.), M.B. E., M.Inst.T., Divisional Superintendent of Operations (Manchester), London Midland and Scottish Railway. Mr. Royle entered Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway service in August, 1898, in the Trains Section of the Passenger Superintendent's Office, and was transferred to the personal staff of the Passenger Superintendent in 1900, in which position he remained until October, 1914, when he was appointed Confidential Assistant to the then Superintendent of the Line, in connection with the work of the Railway Executive Committee in London. In February, 1919, Mr. Royle was appointed Assistant Superintendent of the Line, and on the amalgamation of the London and North Western and Lancashire and Yorkshire Railways, as from January 1st, 1922, Assistant Divisional General Superintendent, and in 1923, Assistant General Superintendent (Western Division). His present appointment dates from 1924.

RYAN (A. A.), Hotels Manager, Southern Scottish Area, London and North Eastern Railway. Mr. Ryan was born in London in 1884, being educated at St. Mark's College, Chelsea. Prior to entering the Hotels Department-of the former London and North Western Railway Company in 1904, he served for three years with the Surveyors to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners for England. He was ten years with the London and North Western Railway Company, and was responsible for much of the work in connection with hotel reorganizing, planning of structural alterations, furnishing, decorating and other improvements overt= the system. In 1914 he was appointed Hotels Manager of the Great North of Scotland Railway, Aberdeen. In 1918 Mr. Ryan held a commission in the R.N.V.R. and was engaged in mine-sweeping. His present appointment dates from early in 1925.

RYAN (J. E.), Hotels., Superintendent, Southern Area, London and North Eastern Railway. Mr. Ryan was appointed Hotels Superintendent (Great Central and Great Northern Sections), London and North Eastern Railway, in February, 1925, having previously held the position of Hotels Superintendent, Scottish Area, to which he was appointed in January, 1923. Mr. Ryan obtained his early experience in the service of the London and North Western Railway, but in June, 1906, he went to Aberdeen as Hotels Manager to the Great, North of Scotland Railway with headquarters at the Palace Hotel, Aberdeen. In January, 1912, Mr. Ryan was made Hotels Manager to the North British Railway Company, with headquarters in Edinburgh. His present appointment dates from hay 1st, 1932. SARGENT (W. A.), M.B.E., Assistant to Chief General Superintendent (Train Diagrams, Engine Workings, etc.), London Midland and Scottish Railway. Mr. Sargent commenced as Junior Clerk with Mr. 0. H. Jones, Assistant Loco-motive Superintendent, Midland Railway, Derby, in October, 1889. From 1894 to 1907 he dealt with freight engine workings, and assisted with train times, speeds, loads and staff work. In August, 1907, Mr. Sargent was transferred to the Traffic Department under Mr. C. W. Paget, who a short time previously had been appointed General Superintendent. Soon after this date, Mr. Sargent was instrumental in introducing the present method of timing trains by the aid of .diagrams (illustrated in the "Railway Gazette " of July 8th, 1921), and assisted in the organisation of the control system and revised train-working arrangements on the Midland Railway. In October, 1912, he was made Shipping Coal Controller; in August, 1914, he became Assistant Superintendent of Freight Trains; in January, 1917, he was appointed Superintendent of Operations Assistant; and in August, 1919, General Superintendent's Assistant. From August, 1914, Mr. Sargent was responsible to the General Superintendent for the transit of troops, etc., over the Midland system, and in connection with these services was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire in January, 1918.
