OLDHAM (A.), O.B.E., Assistant Divisional Manager (Southern Area), London and North Eastern Railway. Born at Gee Cross, near Hyde, Mr. Oldham entered the service of the then Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway in 1890 as a probationer, being subsequently appointed a Junior Clerk in the Superintendent's Office. Here he obtained a wide and varied experience, passing through the several sections of the office, and eventually rising to the position of Chief Clerk. Mr. Oldham left the Traffic Department in July, 1914, on being appointed Chief Clerk to the General Manager, but during the same year spent a short period in the North as an Assistant to the Manchester District Traffic Manager. Towards the end of 1914 Mr. Oldham returned to the General Manager's Department as Personal Assistant to Sir Sam Fay. During Sir Sam Fay's tenure of office as Director of Movements and Railways, Mr. Oldham spent a considerable amount of time at the War Office in connection with military railway questions, whilst also covering his important duties at Marylebone. In 1919-he was appointed Assistant Superintendent of the Line, -Great Central Railway, and subsequently, after the amalgamation, he became Assistant to the Chief General Manager, London and North Eastern Railway, in charge of Parliamentary and Works matters. In 1925 he received his present appointment.

OLDHAM (A.), Divisional Signal and Telegraph Engineer (Derby), London Midland and Scottish Mr. Oldham, after serving a short apprenticeship with a firm of builders and contractors, entered the service of the London and North Western Railway Company in 1890, and was employed in the Locomotive Works for a period of two years. He was then transferred to the signal department drawing office and, after several years' service, was appointed Head Draughtsman of the Signal Section. During this period Mr, Oldham attended the evening classes of the Crewe Mechanics' Institution and had considerable success in the science examinations. Subsequently, he became Chief Draughtsman for the Electrical, Signal and Telegraph Sections. When Mr. Roberts was appointed Signal Superintendent, Mr. Oldham became his Assistant and served in this capacity for fifteen years. His present appointment dates from 1928. Mr. Oldham is a, Member of the Council of the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers.

ORTON (George Ernest), Assistant Commercial Advertising and Publicity Agent, Great Western Railway. Mr. Orton entered Great Western Railway service in 1903, in the Advertising Department, and was transferred to the General Manager's Office in 1912, where he was engaged in the sections dealing with joint arrangements and private sidings, Board of Trade regulations and accidents and new works. Except for a period of about two and a-half years on war service, he remained in the General Manager's Office until February, 1923, when he returned to the Publicity Department. In April, 1926, he was appointed Assistant Publicity Agent, and in May, 1929, General Agent for the U.S.A. and Canada. He returned to England in August. 1931, and was appointed to his present position as from January 1st, 1932.
