1851 Great Exhibition: Official Catalogue: Class IX.: John Smith

From Graces Guide
Mr. J. Smith's Chatt-cutter

256. SMITH, JOHN, Albert Iron Works, Uxbridge.

Patent chaff-cutter, cylindrical iron sifter, thrashing-machine, barley hummeller, oat and bean mill, iron skim plough, winnowing machine, turnip-cutter, etc.

The novelty claimed for this machine (fig. 2) consists in placing the axle upon which the knives are fastened within the range of the long way of the mouth-piece, instead of the short way, as in others; thereby placing the shaft directly over the work, and having the weight of the fly-wheel upon the stuff. The friction on the bearings is thus reduced, and the active power of the knife is increased.
