James Caldwell

Consulting Engineer, 2, Chantry House, Eccleston Street, Eaton Square, Westminster, London, S.W.1.

Career:

  • 1905-20, Partner in consulting firm of James E. Sayers and Caldwell, Electrical Engineers, Glasgow.
  • War service with Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, R.E., and War Office; later at the Admiralty as deputy Asst. Director of Materials and Supt. of Welding and Labour Saving; also visited America for service with United States Shipping Board and War Dept., at Washington.
  • 1917-18 Responsible for early applications of electric welded construction, including a cross-Channel barge, and
  • 1919-21 several factory buildings.
  • 1919 Awarded Telford Premium, Inst.C.E.
  • 1922 Paris Premium, I.E.E.
  • 1930-37 retained by the Quasi-Arc Co., Ltd., to extend the development of electric welding to steel construction.
  • 1931 Inspected welded undertakings throughout the British Empire, and
  • 1936 in the U.S.A
