Lister Electric Light and Power Manufacturing Co or Lister Electric Manufacturing Co[1] - supplied Dursley with electricity

1817 George Lister walked from his home town of Liversedge, Yorkshire, to Dursley, Glos., where he gained employment as a card-maker in the wool cloth industry[2].

Soon after, on inheriting some money, George purchased Rivers Mill, Dursley and developed it into a tanning and card-making and wire-drawing factory.

George married Charlotte who gave birth to four children, two of whom died young. After Charlotte died in 1832, George married again. His second wife, Louisa, had four sons and four daughters. One of them was Robert Ashton Lister, born in 1845, who went on to set up R. A. Lister and Co.

1870 George died. His son, William James Lister, continued to operate the Rivers Mill business, succeeded by his sons, James Fraser Lister and George Lister. They broadened the product range.

1894 The brothers established the Lister Electric Light and Power Manufacturing Co at their factory at Rivers Mill. This brought electric power to the town of Dursley for the first time.

1903 After the death of William, the company was taken over by R. A. Lister and Co, in which Fraser Lister was engaged. See The Lister Electrical Machinery Co.[3]

1907 The company and factory was taken over by John Herbert St. Hill Mawdsley forming Mawdsleys.
