Major General Kenelm Charles Appleyard (1894-1968)
1922 Assoc.M.I. Min.E., M.I.&S.I., Colliery and Mech. Engr. General Manager of The Birtley Iron Co., Birtley, Co. Durham; b. 1894; s. of C. W. Appleyard, Johannesburg, S. Africa. Ed. Colet Court and St. Paul's Sch., Kensington, and privately. Served apprenticeship with C. A. Parsons and Co., Ltd.; appointed Asst. Manager in charge of production at their Close Works, Gateshead; kept this appointment on the transfer of works to Sir W. G. Armstrong Whitworth and Co., Ltd.; in latter years responsible for production inside works and at sub-contractors, all stores departments and transport. Joined The Birtley Iron Co. in 1919, and responsible for entire modernisation and reorganisation of works, covering foundries and general engineering shops. Specialises in the application of ball and roller bearings in mining work and in improved efficient plant for colliery purposes. Club: Union, Newcastle-on-Tyne, and Old Pauline. Major-Gen. K. C. Appleyard, CBE, TD, (Member) a prominent industrialist in the N East, died recently at the age of 73.
In 1916 he was commissioned in the Territorial. Army, Royal Engineers, becoming a Colonel in 1937 and in the same year was awarded the OBE. Three years later he was appointed one of the directors of the Labour Supply Board, under the chairmanship of Mr Ernest Bevin.
Gen. Appleyard, who was a former president of the Institution of Production Engineers, was made a Member of this Institution in 1938.
The Institution has lost a distinguished member and friend with his death.
