1953 Manager, Traction Dept., British Thomson-Houston Co. Ltd., Rugby. Born Hampstead, loth July, 1893. Educated at St. Peter's College, Westminster, and Trinity College, Cambridge. Joined Army as Despatch Rider, 1914; became Sergeant 1915 and served in France with loth Division Signal Co., R.E. Commissioned in R.A. in 1917 and returned to France with No. 16 Siege Battery and subsequently commanded " G.G." Sound-ranging Section, Field Survey Bns., R.E. Demobilised with rank of Captain, 1919. Joined B.T.H. as student apprentice, 1920; joined Traction Dept., 1922 as Application Engineer; appointed Manager, 1936. During 1939 war engaged on development of Aircraft Electrical Equipment, and appointed Manager, Aircraft Equipment Section, B.T.H., 1942-45. Director of Associated Manufacturers of Electric Traction Equipment Ltd. since 1943. Has published many papers and given lectures on Electric Traction and kindred subjects.


1954 Obituary [1]

We have learned with regret of the death of Mr. Edward Townsend Hippisley, M.I.E.E., which occurred at 60, Lillington Road, Leamington Spa, on December 9th. Since 1936, he had been the manager of the traction department (sales and engineering) of the British Thomson-Houston Company, Ltd.

Mr. Hippisley joined the company in 1920, when he started a three-year post-graduate apprenticeship. He entered the traction department in 1923 and from 1929 was responsible for heavy traction contracts involving electric and diesel-electric locomotives.
