William Watson ( -1885)
1885 Obituary [1]
WM. WATSON, general manager of the Solway Hematite Iron and Steel Works, Maryport, died at his residence, Risehow, near Maryport, on September 5th, 1885.
The deceased succeeded Dr. E. G. Tosh as manager of the Solway Works after that gentleman had gone to Lonsdale-in-Furness.
His first business connection in the county was an agency with Kirk & Valentine, of the Forge Quay Works, Workington, when the iron trade in the district was of very small dimensions.
He afterwards held the post of principal salesman to the West Cumberland Iron and Steel Company, and while in this capacity he became well known as a man of authority and knowledge on trade matters throughout the English and Continental markets.
Some weeks previous to his decease he was stricken with a brain disease while travelling between Maryport and Carlisle. He lingered only for a short time and ultimately he died from paralysis.
The deceased had been a member of the Iron and Steel Institute since 1878.
