"WILLIAM SYDNEY EDWARDS, whose death occurred at Stafford on 28th December 1946, at the age of sixty-four, was managing director of Messrs. W. G. Bagnall, Ltd., of Castle Engine Works, Stafford, and had been associated with the firm for forty-four years.
He was born at Hanley. Staffordshire, and after completing his general education at the High School in that town in 1896 became a locomotive engineering apprentice at the works of Messrs. Kerr, Stuart, and Company, Ltd., Stoke on Trent. He began, in 1902, his long connection with Messrs. Bagnall and at the early age of twenty was placed in charge of the drawing office. Subsequently he was made general manager and in 1032 he became managing director.
More recently he joined the Board of Messrs. Cowlishaw Walker and Company, Ltd., and served as managing director. Mr. Edwards, who was well known in engineering circles in Staffordshire, had been president of the North Staffordshire Engineering Employers Association since 1938. He was vice-president of the Birmingham, Wolverhampton, and Stafford District Engineering and Allied Employers' Association and a member of council of the Midland Regional Committee of the Engineering and Allied Employers' National Federation. He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1913 and was transferred to Membership in 1916. In addition he had served as vice-president of the Institution of Locomotive Engineers."
