From Graces Guide

1963 Obituary[1]

"WE regret to record the death of MR. WILLIAM SAMPSON, a director of Foster Wheeler Ltd. Mr. Sampson, who was seventy-four, died on September 12, but the fact has only just been brought to our notice. He spent some years in marine engineering and then, in 1926, joined Mr. J. Johnson and assisted in the development of the Johnson boiler. In 1938 Mr. Sampson joined Foster Wheeler and he was appointed a director of the company in 1949. He was responsible for developing a light-weight boiler for Naval steam gun boats of the "Grey Goose" class and for the two-furnace, controlled superheat boiler for the "Weapons" and "Daring" class. Later, he developed the External Superheat "D" type boiler, a design which is now widely used. Mr. Sampson retired in 1958, but continued to serve Foster Wheeler as an outside director and consultant."
