WILLIAM RIDLEY received his technical education at Rutherford College, Newcastle upon Tyne, and served his apprenticeship with Messrs. J. Abbott and Company, Ltd., from 1904 to 1909. He was then employed as a draughtsman by Messrs. Head, Wrightson and Company until 1911, and after holding the appointment of designer to Messrs. Cowans, Sheldon and Company, by whom he was engaged on the design of cranes and lifting appliances, for two years, he returned to the former firm in the capacity of chief designer, with responsibility to the chief engineer for miscellaneous army and navy munitions.
In 1928 he was appointed chief engineer to the Stanton Ironworks Company, Ltd., Nottingham, taking charge of the staff and equipment of five works, including blast furnaces and power stations. He held that position until his death, which occurred on 6th August 1941.
Mr. Ridley was elected a Member of the Institution in 1938.
