1906 Obituary [1]

WILLIAM NOWELL died at his residence, Church Street, Nuneaton, on February 17, 1906. He was educated at Allesley College, and received an engineering education under the late Mr. R. Smallman.

During his subsequent career he acquired an extensive knowledge of colliery engineering, and for many years managed the Haunchwood Colliery, Whittleford, the name of the firm being John Nowell & Son.

In 1881 the colliery was acquired by Sir Alfred Hickman, who further developed it, retaining the services of Mr. Nowell as general manager.

He was a keen sportsman, and was a member of the Automobile Club. He was a member of the Institution of Mining Engineers and of the Colliery Managers Association.

He was elected a member of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1902.
