WILLIAM NEWTON WESTON was for a quarter of a century an active director of Messrs. Herbert Morris, Ltd., makers of cranes and transporting machinery, of Loughborough, with which firm he had been associated since 1907. He was born in Hull in 1876 and was educated-privately and at Barkerend School, Bradford. In 1890 he began a five years' apprenticeship with the Blackman Ventilating Company (later Messrs. Keith, Blackman and Company, Ltd.) after which he was appointed engineer representative to the firm and was placed in charge of the branch offices in Bristol, London, and Leeds.
He joined Messrs. R. Dawson and Company, Ltd., ventilating engineers, of Stalybridge, in 1902, and after holding the position of engineer representative for three years he went into business on his own account. Two years later he began his long association with Messrs. Herbert Morris; shortly after joining the firm he was made secretary and some years later he became a director. In this capacity he took a very active part in the technical and commercial management of the firm's affairs, especially in the standardization and improvement in the design of electric overhead travelling cranes.
He was an old and valued supporter of the Institution, of which he was elected an Associate Member in 1902 and transferred to Membership in 1908. His death occurred at his home in Loughborough on 1st November 1941.
