TO ENGINEERS AND MILLWRIGHTS, And especially, to those interested in the Manufacture of Fixed and Locomotive Steam Engines.
TO BE SOLD BY AUCTION, By BREAREY and EYRE, BY order of Assignees, and free from Auction duty, at the Royal Hotel, in Derby, on FRIDAY, the 24th of July, 1840, at 6 o'clock in the afternoon, subject to Conditions to be then produced.
LOT 1. THE EXTENSIVE PREMISES in NUN'S-STREET, DERBY, well known for many years as the Steam Engine Manufactory, Millwrights’ works, Saw and Colour Mills, of Mr. WILLIAM MOSEDALE, including spacious Workshops, Fitting-up and Model Rooms for engine making, Iron Planing-house, Circular Saw Mill, Brass Foundry, Dutch Lead Mill and Stoves, spacious Shop for large iron face and boring lathe, Screw-cutting and Other Lathes, Drilling, &c. ; Blacksmiths, Joiners, and Cooper's Shops, Stables, Counting-house, and Other suitable Buildings, with an excellent supply of pure water, and ample space for a great extension of business; to which is attached and fronting to the street, THREE DWELLING HOUSES. The whole contains about 5,893 square yards. These Works have been so long known in. Derbyshire and so highly esteemed for their facilities in the manufacture and repair of Steam Engines, Mill Machinery, &c., and have of late become so useful to Railway Engineers and Contractors, by affording the readiest place for executing all sorts of work connected with locomotive power, that a more detailed account can only, be necessary to those living at a distance, and it is respectfully suggested that to Gentlemen engaged in Engineering pursuits, the convenience of the premises, added to the vast facilities now afforded to every description of manufacture by the concentration of numerous Railway termini in Derby, afford ample encouragement for the commencement of such business here, or its removal from less favoured localities. Coal, Iron, Cauk (or Sulphate of Barytes), and a variety of other Minerals, are close at hand and cheap, while the competition of Railways and Canals furnish the greatest facilities for carriage. Besides the general Engineering business, the Dutch Lead (from the Derbyshire cauk), manufactured at these works, stands in high repute for purity and colour, and it is well known that it is one of the most profitable branches of the British Colour trade.
The Works are in full operations, and require but the aid of moderate capital and application to take the lead of every similar establishment in the Midland Counties. The whole or any part of the fixed machinery, consisting of steam engine. plaining machine, circular saws, lathes, and colour mill fixtures, also the valuable stock of models, may be taken at a valuation or not, as the purchaser may choose.

The Whole of the VALUABLE fixed and other MACHINERY, TOOLS and STOCK-lN-TRADE, on the above Premises, consisting of a 10-horse Condensing Engine, with boiler, and a variety of shafting leading to all parts of the premises, an iron planing machine, 28 feet on the bed, with two Saddles and gearing, complete ; castings for a large drilling machine; strong iron chuck lathe, for boring und turning, 24 feet bed, 6½ feet and 2½ chuck plates; two large double slide rests, self-acting motions and gearing complete; 21 feet lathe, with extra heads, double slide rests and gearing; two 11 feet lathes, tapping machine, post drill, a great quantity Of turning and drilling tools, taps and dies, a vast variety of valuable wood and iron patterns for machinery, five large anvils, stocks, dies, and tools for a blacksmith’s shop, 400 files, counting-house desk, clock, two strong timber drugs, three carts, gig, gearing and harness, five horses, excellent straw cutter, block of stone 12 feet long, 4 feet wide, 2 feet thick; quantity of timber, poles hoop, and heading; wrought and cast iron, steel, &c. complete machinery for the manufacture of Dutch lead, consisting of four pair of grey stones, two pair of rollers, four pair of Mountsorrel granite stones, one pair of cauk rollers, cauk washing machine, with gearing complete to all, lead piping, implements, steam boilers, bleaching becks, steam piping, drying racks, &c., a quantity of superior Dutch lead, and some barytes in process, saw mill fixtures, consisting of three circular saws, with benches and gearing, four wood turning lathes with long bench and gearing; tools, dry wood &c., also gas and steam piping for the whole premises. 1849 Sale of machinery and other effects. 'ALL the STOCK of MACHINERY, and other Effects, consisting of a capital Three-horse High-pressure STEAM ENGINE with Boiler, entirely new, Shafting, Drums, Pulleys and Gearing thereunto belonging. Also, an excellent self-acting Slide Lathe, 36 feet long, with Bars, &c., complete. Also, Two other Slide and Screw-cutting Lathes, 7 feet long, with Cast-iron Bars, &c., complete. Together with Patent Bellows. Anvil, Benches, Vices, Smiths' and other Tools, Wood and other Models for Castings, Patent Weighing Machine and Weights, Two Joiner's Benches, and sundry other Effects....'[5]
