William Mackie (1862-1926)

1926 Obituary [1]

WILLIAM MACKIE was born at Kirkcaldy, Fifeshire, on 6th September 1862 and received his early education at the Pathhead Public School in that town.

During the years 1877-83 he served his apprenticeship with the late Messrs. J. and T. Dale, engineers and boiler makers, of Kirkcaldy, passing through the various departments and adding to his knowledge of professional matters by attending local technical classes.

After completing his indentures he spent a further year with Messrs. Dale, and then in 1884 went to Govan where he was for many years with Messrs Aitken, McNeil and Co., engineers and shipbuilders, first as draughtsman, then as chief draughtsman, and subsequently as chief of technical department.

On leaving in 1907 he became general manager with Messrs. A. and W. Smith and Co., Ltd., of the Eglinton Engine Works, Glasgow, and ten years later he was appointed Managing Director, a position which he held at the time of his death, which occurred on 24th January 1926.

He gave special attention to the design and production of sugar-making machinery, and the factory equipment connected therewith, and was responsible for important installations in South Africa and elsewhere.

He became a Member of this Institution in 1913.
