William John Padgen received his technical education and apprenticeship at Woolwich Arsenal, and after a total period of twelve years in the Royal Laboratory and Royal Gun Factory was appointed Works Foreman with the Waverley Typewriting Co., Ltd.

He then became Works Foreman with the Thomas Manufacturing Co., Ltd., of Clerkenwell, and in 1902 took up the position of Manager of J. A. Wilding and Co., Ltd., occupying this position until his death, which took place on 19th October, 1931, at the age of 63.

He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1920.
