WILLIAM JAMES COOPER was an expert in lift erection and testing and supervised the construction of the first lift at Balmoral Castle for Queen Victoria.
He was born in 1875 and received his technical education at the Polytechnic, Regent Street.
Mr. Cooper commenced his engineering career in 1893 with the firm of Messrs. R. Waygood, lift engineers, and afterwards took charge of the testing department. He subsequently superintended outside erecting and testing until 1900 when he joined the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation's head office staff, lift section, London.
Later he became chief departmental engineer, British Engine Boiler and Electrical Insurance Company, Manchester, in charge of the design and construction of machinery for the transportation of passengers, general merchandise goods, and minerals. He also carried on inspection work.
Mr. Cooper had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1901, and he was also an Associate Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
His death occurred on 17th October 1931.
