WILLIAM HENRY MAXWELL was born on the 1st February 1803, at Dundalk, Ireland, and educated in the Endowed Classical Academy of that town.
He then studied mathematics and drawing to qualify him for a draughtsman upon the Ordnance Survey of Ireland under General Colby, R.E. He spent five years in the province of Ulster as first-class draughtsman.
He then came to England, and was employed for twenty years under Lieutenant-Colonel Dawson, R.E., upon the survey of copyhold enclosure and tithe commutation, when his health and eyesight failing him, he was obliged to retire from the Government service upon a pension.
He was elected an Associate of the Institution on the 7th of March, 1843.
