William Edward Lloyd M.C., had held the position of borough engineer for Newport, Mon., for the last ten years of his life....[more]
He was born at Dudley in 1884 and articled to Mr. C. G. Mason, borough engineer, Guildford, and assisted in the installation of high-speed engines and carburetted water-gas plant at the gas works there.
In 1905 he was appointed resident engineer in charge of new main sewage works for Guildford, and three years later was engaged on the design and construction of a waterworks pumping station in the same district.
He became assistant borough engineer in 1911 and three years later was appointed resident engineer on an important drainage scheme for Reading Corporation.
He was released for military service in 1915 and served with distinction in France, where he was awarded the M.C., and attained the rank of Major.
After the Armistice he was attached to the Chief Mechanical Engineer's Wagon Department at Audruicq for a year and in 1920 returned to England and became contractor's engineer to the Unit Construction Company.
In 1924 he was appointed borough and water engineer to Newport Corporation. He was associated with Messrs. Mott, Hay, and Anderson in the construction of the new bridge over the River Usk at Newport, and was also responsible for the design and construction of the civil engineering works in connexion with the River Usk pumping station for Newport Electricity Undertaking, which comprised a large reinforced concrete caisson founded in the River Usk.
He devised a scheme, now completed, for the prevention of floods in the Malpas area, and prepared plans for the widening of several main roads and the construction of by-passes.
In 1928 he became associated with the Talybont Water Undertaking, for which he was at first appointed constructional engineer, taking full responsibility in 1933.
His death occurred on 10th February 1934.
Major Lloyd was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1901; he was transferred to Associate Membership in 1910, and to Membership in 1928. He was also a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
