William Dredge (1822-1886)

of Buckingham Street, Adelphi, engineer and bridge designer.

1822 Born, son of James Dredge, Senior in Devizes

1848 Supervised the erection of a suspension footbridge across the Ropery Grounds, in the Sun Tavern Fields, Shadwell to connect Commercial Road and London Docks. Clear span 91 ft.[1]

1850 Married Elizabeth Williams in Chelsea[2]

1850-2 Henry Palfrey Stephenson was in partnership with William Dredge as Dredge and Stephenson, engaged in the construction of bridges in England and Wales.

1861 Civil engineer, living in Lambeth with his wife, Elizabeth[3]

1870 With Andrew Stein, patented a system of coupling driving wheels in such a way that perfect flexibility is preserved in the machine, so that it can adapt itself to any curve of the road, particularly suitable for mountain railways[4]

1886 Died in Lambeth[5]
