William Cleland had been a manager for T. and W. Smith of North Shields

1867 Cleland began business for himself.

1872 Registered as William Cleland's Graving Dock. The yard was famous for the sideways launching of its ships, a practical solution to a cramped space.

1890 Reconstruction of the company and in future it will be known as Clelands Graving Dock and Slipway Co. William D. Stephens is Chairman. [1]
