WILFRED BUTLER was a director of Messrs. Butler and Son, B. and S. Valves, Ltd., of Dukinfield, near Manchester. The firm specialized in the production of brass castings, gunmetal and bronze valves for high-pressure steam, and metallic packings.

Mr. Butler was born at Ashton under Lyne in 1887 and received his technical education at Manchester Municipal College of Technology.

He joined his father in the Dukinfield works in 1903, when he became an apprentice, and served for six years, after which he entered the drawing office. In 1912 he was made a foreman, and subsequently became works manager.

During the War, he was responsible for organizing the works for the production of trench howitzer bombs and of centre pieces for hand grenades. Mr. Butler then became a partner in the firm and took out a number of patents for inventions relating to the firm's products.

He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1918.

His death occurred at Ashton under Lyne on 19th April 1936.
