Dr W. H. Darlington, M.B.E., M.Sc.(Eng.), Ph.D. (Member), is the newly elected Chairman of the North Western Branch. He received his technical education at the City and Guilds College London and served a post-graduate apprenticeship with Metropolitan-Vickers, now A.E.I. (Manchester) Ltd, from 1935-37. After working in the Company's Mechanical Engineering Department, he became a Section Leader and was concerned with the development of the gas turbine during the 1939-45 war. He was awarded the M.B.E. for this work.

From 1945 he was Head of the Gas Turbine Engineering and the Gear Engineering Departments before taking up his present position as Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Turbine-Generator Division of A.E.I. in 1958 Dr Darlington was elected a Student of the Institution in 1934, transferring to Graduate in 1936, Associate Member in 1943 and Member in 1959. From 1953-55 and again from 1957 until the present time, he has served as a member of the Branch Committee.

In 1956 he was awarded the Silver Medal of the Institute of Marine Engineers, of which he is a member. He is also an Associate Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and an Associate of the City and Guilds of London Institute.

Dr W. H. Darlington, M.B.E., Ph.D., M.Sc.(Eng.) (Member), took up his duties as Deputy Managing Director of Stothert and Pitt Ltd in February 1963.

Dr Darlington graduated with first class honours from the City and Guilds Engineering College in 1935 and was awarded his M.Sc. in the following year. He joined Metropolitan-Vickers, now A.E.I. (Manchester) Ltd, in 1935 and worked on the development of the gas turbine during the 1939/45 war. He was awarded the M.B.E. for this work. During the period 1949/58, he was Chief Engineer of several design departments including gas turbines, gearing, and condensers and heat exchangers. In 1958 he was one of the first divisional Chief Engineers of A.E.I. to be appointed.

Dr Darlington was elected a Student of the Institution in 1934, transferring to Graduate in 1936, Associate Member in 1943 and Member in 1959. He was North Western Branch Chairman in 1961. He is a member of several institutions and author of a number of papers.

In January 1963 he was awarded the Fellowship of the City and Guilds of London Institute.
