"VINCENT GARTSIDE, M.B.E., specialized in the design and manufacture of machine tools during the whole of his professional career, and had been associated with the firm of Messrs. John Holroyd and Company, Ltd., of Milnrow, Rochdale, for nearly fifty years.
On the conclusion of a six years' apprenticeship with Messrs. Thomas Robinson and Sons, of Rochdale, in 1897, he began his long career with Messrs. Holroyd as a draughtsman, and after holding executive appointments in all departments of the works became resident engineer in charge of the London office in 1919. For a brief period during 1927 he acted as general manager of the works at Rochdale. In 1916 he was attached to the Ministry of Munitions where he rendered valuable services in connection with the supply and disposal of machine tools. Mr. Gartside, whose death occurred on 11th December 1947, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1913. He was awarded the Constantine Gold Medal of the Manchester Association of Engineers for a paper on "Gear Cutting Machinery"."
