Union Canal

Union Canal, from Edinburgh to Falkirk, West Lothian, 32 miles, one tunnel, 2 locks.

Also known as the Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal.

Built to a design by Hugh Baird to link Edinburgh with the Forth and Clyde Canal at Falkirk.

1818 Construction work began

Includes the impressive Slateford Aqueduct, Edinburgh, Avon Aqueduct, and Almond Aqueduct, west of Ratho as well as the only canal tunnel in Scotland.

1822 The canal opened.

The waterway features the Falkirk Wheel Boat Lift.
