Trumble and Cooke

From Graces Guide

Wall paper manufacturers, of Leeds

This business was founded by John Trumble, a Huddersfield painter, and William Cooke who, between 1841 and 1846, acquired a paper-staining business in Leeds which had been following this trade since the latter part of the eighteenth century.

William Cooke was the son of a paper maker at Richmond, Yorkshire, and was thus able to ensure regular supplies of raw material for the enterprise.

1845 Premises caught fire. Trumble and Cooke, Paper Stainers, of York Street.[1]

1854 They vacate 'The Leeds Paper Hanging Warehouse' as they are leaving the retail trade. Retail business taken over by Hummerston Brothers.[2]

The Trumble and Cooke partnership lasted until 1855, when the former continued in the old premises at York Street with his sons, and the latter started a new business at another address in Leeds.

1855 Partnership dissolved. '... the Partnership lately subsisting between us the undersigned, as Paper Hanging Manufacturers, at Leeds, in the county of York, and in Oxford-street, in the city of London, under the firm of Trumble and Cooke, was this day dissolved by mutual consent. All debts due and owing to or from the said partnership will be received and paid by the said John Trumble, who will in future carry on the said business....John Trumble, William Cooke.'[3]
