Thomas Newton Harrop was educated at Glossop Technical School and Sheffield University, and received his practical training at Glossop Electricity Works and Sheffield-Simplex Motor Works, Ltd.

His first position was as Senior Draughtsman in the Commercial Vehicle Department of the Daimler Company, and from there he went to Rolls-Royce, Ltd., and subsequently to Crossley Motors, Ltd., as Senior Draughtsman.

In 1923 he was appointed to the Engineering Staff of Morris Engines, Ltd., at Coventry, and afterwards transferred to the Cowley Works. The last position which he occupied was on the Technical Staff of the Sunbeam Motor Car Co., Ltd.

He died on 31st October, 1931, at the age of 43.

He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1925.
