THOMAS ALLEN was associated with the Bristol firm of Messrs. George Adlam and Sons, Ltd., for the whole of his professional career.
After receiving his technical education at the Merchant Venturers' Technical College, Bristol, from 1883 to 1886, he became an apprentice at Messrs. Adlam's works in Ellbroad Street and served in the workshop and drawing office until 1894 when he was made a draughtsman. In 1896 he entered the estimating department and three years later he became assistant to the works manager. He was appointed works manager in 1901 and from 1904 onwards he assisted in the general management of the firm's business. In 1908 the firm was formed into a limited liability company, and Mr. Allen was appointed secretary and manager. He was appointed managing director in 1920. The firm, in addition to general engineering and foundry work, specialized in machinery and plant for breweries, copper stills, and cooling machinery, paint mills, also various types of mixing and grinding machines for chocolate manufacture, for the design of which Mr. Allen was himself responsible. Under his direction the company's new workshops were laid out at Fishponds, Bristol, and the plant and machinery installed.
Mr. Allen was elected a Member of the Institution in 1924.
His death occurred on 27th September 1935, in his sixty-seventh year.
