Telcon Metals

of Crawley

1864 Merger of the Gutta Percha Co with Glass, Elliot and Co to form the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Co (Telcon), which was responsible for supplying the first operating cable across the English Channel. The companyw was then involved in laying the first transatlantic cable in 1866, using the SS Great Eastern.

1924 Telcon invented a range of important soft magnetic nickel iron alloys, with the registered brand name 'MUMETAL'.

1955 The factory at Crawley was opened and performed well in its first year

1956 Telcon Magnetic Cores was part of the metals group

1959 Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Co was taken over by BICC

By 1961 the Telcon Metals group of companies was part of BICC

1968 Queen's Award to Industry for Export Achievement

Presumably later became part of BICC Metals

Products included a range of non-sparking and non-magnetic copper alloy tools.

2006 Management buyout.

The company now manufactures nickel iron cores for critical transformer applications, and magnetic components which use high performance soft magnetic cores, including open and closed loop Hall effect current sensors, transformers, and strip wound toroidal cores.
