MR. THOMAS ARKLE CROWE, M.Sc. was educated at Durham School and Armstrong College, Newcastle upon Tyne, where he gained the degrees of B.Sc. and M.Sc. He served his apprenticeship with R. and W. Hawthorn, Leslie and Company, Ltd., Newcastle upon Tyne, from 1915 to 1921, with the exception of two years during which he served as an engineer sub-lieutenant in the Royal Navy.
In 1921 he entered the drawing office of R. and W. Hawthorn, Leslie and Company, Ltd., and later became assistant outside manager and assistant to the general manager.
From 1935 to 1951 he was engineering director in charge of the engine works of John Brown and Company, Ltd., Clydebank, during which period the works completed the machinery for the Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, Vanguard, and many other vessels; in 1951 he joined the North British Locomotive Company as chief managing director. He is also chairman of Henry Pels & Co., Ltd., and a director of Carntyne Steel Castings Co., Ltd.
Mr. Crowe was elected a Graduate in 1924, an Associate Member in 1925, and a Member in 1937. He was elected Chairman of the Scottish Branch, 1941 and 1942, and served on the Council in 1944, 1947 and 1950. He was elected Vice-President in March of this year.
Mr. Crowe is a Member of Council of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland; a Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and a Justice of the Peace for Dumbarton.
