SYDNEY HOWARD SEYMOUR was born in 1880, and served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Buckle and Company, Ltd., of Plymouth, from 1897 to 1901. After a brief period of experience with Messrs. Cammell, Laird and Company, Birkenhead, where he was employed on the installation of machinery in a battleship, he went to sea and sailed in ships of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, from 1901 to 1916, rising from sixth engineer to be chief engineer. During that period he obtained his first-class Board of Trade Engineer's Certificate.
He then proceeded to South America where he received an appointment as resident mechanical engineer to the British Guiana Sugar Factories Company, of Demerara, which he held until 1918. A year later he became associated with Messrs. Curtis Campbell and Company, Ltd., of British Guiana and London, as consulting engineer, and took charge of their sugar factories until 1923. For the remainder of his professional career, although continuing to act as a consultant, he was chiefly concerned with the management of an estate and rice mill, which he had purchased. He was also keenly interested in the welfare of the colony and was a member of the Legislative Council, in which connection he served on various committees reporting on education, the sea defences, irrigation, and the rice industry of the colony.
Mr. Seymour, whose death occurred on 16th December 1943, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1923.
