SYDNEY HENRY FINNEY occupied for fifteen years the position of sales manager and engineer to Messrs. Switchgear and Cowans, Ltd. The firm's works were formerly at Salford, but on their removal to Old Trafford, Mr. Finney was associated with the planning of the new works.
He was born in Newcastle under Lyne, and received his technical education first at Stafford County Technical School, and later at Lincoln Municipal Technical School.
In 1905 he commenced an apprenticeship with Messrs. Siemens Brothers, Ltd., and served in their dynamo works for three years, after which he joined Messrs. Ruston, Proctor and Company, Ltd., as an assistant engineer.
He entered the British Westinghouse Engineering and Manufacturing Company's works at Manchester in 1911 as an assistant in the control gear design department, and two years later became assistant engineer in the sales department of the Lancashire Dynamo and Motor Company, Ltd., being subsequently promoted to chief assistant engineer.
His appointment with Messrs. Switchgear and Cowans dated from 1919.
Mr. Finney was elected to Associate Membership of the Institution in 1920. He was also an Associate Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
His death occurred on 21st June 1934, in his forty-sixth year.
