"SYDENHAM JOSEPH HAWKINS, whose death occurred on 1st January 1948, was in the service of the Crown Agents for the Colonies for over thirty years.
He was born in 1881 and served his time in the locomotive works of the Great India Peninsula Railway at Jhansi from 1898 to 1903. Coming to Scotland in the latter year he became an improver in the shops and drawing office of the North British Locomotive Company, Ltd., at Glasgow. Two years later he went to Manchester, where he was employed as a mechanic by the British Westinghouse and Electrical Manufacturing Company until 1907 when he began his long connection with the Crown Agents for the Colonies with the post of inspecting engineer. At the same time he continued his education at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College. In 1915 he was appointed senior assistant inspector at Manchester with control of a personnel of some 1,800. In 1940 he was transferred to the Ministry of Supply, where he acted as assistant inspector in the armaments division. Mr. Hawkins had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1919."
