1872 Boiler explosion at the brickworks: 'One large piece of the boiler was carried to a very great height, and it lodged in the iron work of the Ouseburn Viaduct, a distance of about three hundred yards from the scene of the disaster, and it remains firmly fixed in its position among the iron supports of the bridge. Another large piece was blown into field near the viaduct, whilst the bricks were scattered in all directions, damaging the adjoining property, and injuring a large number of persons. ....'[1]
