J. E. Shay Ltd, of Basingstoke, Hants.

1940 Emmanuel Kaye and a colleague, John Sharp (d. 1965), pooled their savings to buy two lathes and set up their own engineering business in rented rooms at Mortlake railway station. J. E. Shay Ltd (the name being a combination of E. Kaye and J. Sharp) made precision gauges, tools, and instruments for large companies, including Ford and Hoover.
