S. S. Chang, BSc, PhD, MIProdE, Fellow, was born in China. He received a BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering from Chiao-Tung University, Shanghai and after a period of post-graduate industrial training in Shanghai came to the UK in 1950. He was awarded a post-graduate Diploma in Engineering Production by Birmingham University in 1951 and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering by Manchester University in 1954.

He joined NEL in 1954 and became a Principal Scientific Officer in charge of Plastic Properties of Materials Section.

In 1960 he joined the J. Lucas Group Research Centre at Solihull, and shortly afterwards became Head of Applied Mechanics Department.

In 1969 he was seconded to Aston University as one of three Tutors in charge of the IHD Scheme.
