Royal Commission on Accidents in Mines

1879 Formation of a royal commission on accidents in mines in response to growing concern about the number of accidents in coal mines, and especially doubts about the safety of the existing types of miners' lamps.

The commission made extensive investigations of working practices in mines, and reported to parliament in 1887. As a result the Coal Mines Regulation Act of 1887 was passed.
