Mr. ROBERT WYLIE, who died on the 21st July 1886, from injuries sustained in an accident three days previously, was born on the 25th March 1850, and was thus in his thirty-seventh year. His father was Mr. James Wylie, of Border, Saltcoats.
Educated in a local school, he exhibited as a lad a decided taste and aptitude for mechanics, and was consequently apprenticed in the engineering department of the shipbuilding works of Messrs. Randolph, Elder, & Co., at Govan. Soon after his apprenticeship was out, he was appointed assistant manager of the large engineering works belonging to that firm at Fairfield, on the Clyde; and in 1882 he became manager of the engineering works of Messrs. Thomas Richardson and Sons of Hartlepool. In this capacity be devoted himself very assiduously to watching and assisting the development of the triple expansion marine engine.
At the time of his death he left behind him a posthumous paper on this subject, which was subsequently submitted to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
Mr. Wylie became a member of the Institute in 1883.
