ROBERT WILLIAM ROBERTS, born at Dolwyddelen, Carnarvonshire, on the 4th of September, 1830, was brought up as a practical quarryman and stonecutter at Lord Palmerston’s slate quarry, Festiniog, where his father held the situation of superintendent of the planing and sawing-machinery for upwards of forty years.
He then had for two years control of similar machinery at the Rhiwbach Slate Quarry, North Wales, after which he spent some time in Dublin where he obtained instruction in levelling and dialling and in the theoretical knowledge essential for the management of slate quarries.
In 1864 and 1865 Mr. Roberts was employed in County Tipperary in opening up and developing the Victoria Slate Quarries, near Carrick-on-Suir, and in the following year was appointed in a similar capacity to the Penyrorsedd Slate Quarry, near Carnarvon.
