ROBERT STEVENSON died on November 5, 1921, at his residence, Dowanhill, Glasgow. Mr. Stevenson was principal of the firm of Wm. Stevenson & Company, metal merchants, of Glasgow, and was well known in the trade circles throughout Scotland and in the North of Ireland.
A native of Glasgow, he joined his father's firm in the city - the firm with which his whole business life was associated - immediately on leaving school. He was the sole partner for many years, and under his direction the business grew and prospered. He established a similar business in Belfast, and there also he met with considerable success.
Mr. Stevenson took a good deal of interest in public affairs, and in 1896 he was elected to the Master Court of the Incorporation of Hammermen. He became Collector in 1900, and influenced in his term of office many new members to join the craft. One of his recruits was the Rt. Hon. A. Bonar Law, P.C. Mr. Stevenson was elected Deacon of his Incorporation in 1902 ; he served for six years as representative of the House on the Board of Governors of Anderson's College Medical School. In 1905 he was elected a Director of the Deacons Association, and later became Treasurer of that body, a position in which he had notable success. He was elevated to the position of President of the Association in December 1911. For several years Mr. Stevenson was President of the Glasgow Bute Benevolent Society. He was a Member of the Merchants' House, of the Chamber of Commerce, of the Incorporation of Gardeners, and of the Weavers Society of Anderston. Interested in yachting Mr. Stevenson was a member of the Royal Clyde Club. He was elected a member of the Institute of Metals on December 7, 1910, and took an active part in connection with the Autumn Meeting of the Institute which was held in Glasgow in that year.
