ROBERT MURDOCH GOLDIE was born at Airdrie, Scotland, on 6th March 1868, and was educated at the Albert School in his native town, supplemented subsequently by attendance at the Technical College, Glasgow.
In 1886 he started his apprenticeship with Messrs. John Cowan and Son, millwrights, Glasgow, afterwards spending two years (1888 to 1890) in the mechanical department of Messrs. T. Goldie and Co., Cotton Works, Airdrie, and a further four years with Messrs. William Simons and Co., Renfrew.
In 1894 he left this country for Singapore, where he acted as chief draughtsman to Messrs. Riley Hargreaves and Co., engineers and shipbuilders.
The next two years were spent at sea in the capacities of 2nd and 3rd engineer, the experience thus gained enabling him to obtain his Board of Trade certificate as first-engineer.
In 1897 he again. joined Messrs. Riley Hargreaves and Co., Singapore, as assistant-engineer and manager, and when that firm, along with the business of Messrs. Howarth Erskine and Co., became merged under the style of "United Engineers Limited," Mr. Goldie became manager successively of several of that company's up-country stations.
At the time of his deaths he was manager of the Ipoh branch.
His death occurred in his fifty-seventh year at the Batu Gajah Hospital on 29th August 1921, following an operation for appendicitis.
He became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1902.
