"ROBERT HALL LONGBOTHAM, whose death occurred on 11th March 1948, at the great age of ninety-two, was in former days well known as a prominent mining engineer and consultant. After serving his apprenticeship at the Consett Iron Company's collieries, Co. Durham, and gaining some experience in the drawing office of the company's iron works, from 1873 to 1879, he filled positions as underground manager, manager and surveyor to various collieries in the county of Durham.
From 1884 to 1888 he was general manager of the Brylekinsell Colliery in North Wales. He then began to practise on his own account as a consulting engineer and established the firm of Messrs. R. H. Longbotham and Company, Ltd., in London. In the same year he became the proprietor of the Ingo Foundry and Engineering Works at Wakefield. Besides being chairman and managing director of Messrs. R. H. Longbotham and Company he held directorships in Main Ropeways, Ltd., the Longbotham Clip Company, Ltd., and the Bessemer Sand and Gravel Co. He was also associated with Messrs. Blandford and Gee, cementation engineers and sinking contractors. Mr. Longbotham was a Member of the Institution from 1901 until 1909 and was re-elected a Member in 1924."
