"ROBERT DUDLEY WOOD, who was born in Liverpool in 1873, was closely concerned with the refining and distribution of oils for most of his long professional career.
On leaving Liverpool College Upper School he attended classes at the Liverpool School of Science, Technology, and Art and also studied at the Liverpool University College Engineering School under Professor Heleshaw. His apprenticeship was served in Liverpool between 1889 and 1894 with Messrs. Wannop and Davies, Ltd., and Messrs. David Rollo and Sons, Ltd., marine engineers and shipbuilders. After a brief period at sea as marine engineer and as engineering draughtsman in the office of a Liverpool firm of patent agents, he returned in 1897 to Messrs. Wannop and Davies to take over the duties of foreman in the fitting and turning shops. In the following year he was appointed works manager with the charge of the drawing office and subsequently became general manager. He severed his connection with that firm in 1905 and went into practice on his own account as a consulting engineer.
For the rest of his life Mr. Wood was actively engaged on behalf of various large and important concerns as a quantity surveyor, superintending the delivery and storage of oil in bulk. Amongst the numerous firms concerned were Messrs. Lever Brothers, Ltd., Port Sunlight, with a storage of some 200,000 tons, and Messrs. United Storage, Ltd., Manchester. He also acted on behalf of H.M. Office of Works in connection with the installation of storage tanks and pumping plant.
During the 1914-18 war he was responsible for the superintendence and certifying of quantities of all whale oil cargoes delivered to Great Britain. Mr. Wood had been a Member of the Institution since 1913. His death occurred on 23rd May 1950, in his seventy-eighth year."
