Established in 1784 by Richard Kell, who was succeeded in 1830 by R. W. Hodgson.

1847 Partnership dissolved. '...the Partnership heretofore existing between us the undersigned, Richard Wellington Hodgson and Henry Nelson, in carrying on the business of a Stone Merchant, at Yelling-shore, in the county of Durham, and at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, under the firm of Richard Kell and Company, and in carrying on the business of a Ship and Insurance Broker, at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, under the firm of Hodgson and Nelson, was dissolved...'[1]

1914 Present Principal: J. G. Hodgson, J.P., from 1885. Are proprietors of R. Atkinson and Co. Claims to be the largest and oldest-established firm of its kind. Premises: The area of Stone covered by the firm's leases extends to about two miles by one mile. Business: The manufacture of Grindstones for all purposes.
